The start of summer is always an exciting time, but as the days slog on and the temperatures vault higher and higher, the sunny summer days start to take their toll. When you’ve crossed off all the things on your summer to-do list and you don’t know what to do with the seemingly endless days before school starts again still in front of you, try some of these ideas to spice up your summer and help you make the most of your glorious break from school.
Take a Trip
Pick a spot close by or a little further and make a plan to go there. Sometimes breaking that mid-summer boredom really is as simple changing up your environment for a day or two. Hit the road with friends and/or family for a weekend away to refresh your mind, body, and spirit and get back into the fun of summer.
Hit Up the Library
Okay, okay, maybe this sounds a little too much like school to seem fun on the surface, but there is so much your local library can offer you. From fun summer reading programs to volunteering opportunities and more, this community resource is vastly underutilized. Even if you don’t wind up volunteering or enjoying a program, the library has books, movies, cds, and more for you to check out and enjoy during the hottest days of summer. Curling up by the pool or in the wonderful reprieve of an AC on full-blast with a book are two of the simplest pleasures of summer. Plus, checking out books is free!
Museums, Museums, Museums
The Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Natural History Museum, the Denver Zoo, the Art Museum and more. There are so many awesome learning opportunities to keep your brain and curiosity sharp throughout the summer months. Boredom doesn’t stand a chance when there is so much to marvel. We could spend an entire day in the Nature and Science museum and still want to come back for more.
You don’t have to budget big to bust through boredom this summer. Heading to your local secondhand shop, whether that’s Goodwill or the Buffalo Exchange, or somewhere else entirely, thrifting is an art, and if you’re willing to put in the time and channel your true personal style, you can find some amazing, one-of-a-kind pieces that will make your back to school wardrobe completely unforgettable.
It’s summer in Colorado, and that means it’s the perfect opportunity to test out your green thumb. We have such an interesting growing environment, if you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at gardening, why not plant some herbs, veggies, or decorative flowers this summer? Caring for them can become something of a pastime that can help keep you occupied. As an added bonus, houseplants and outdoor plants help purify the air and get you in touch with nature again.
Have you always wanted to try your hand at something but school and school activities have kept you from having the time to really dig into it? Now is the time! When the mid-summer boredom strikes, look back at all those things you saw others do and said to yourself “Oh man, that’s so cool, I wish I could do that!” Take up drawing, or a new instrument, learn some photography basics, join a community group focused on what you want to learn and go for it. Picking up a new hobby can be the perfect solution to boredom that you just can’t seem to kick.
Hey, we get it. Sometimes the summer can feel like its dragging on and on. Sometimes you might even be wishing for the school year to start again, but before you start organizing your school supplies and counting down the days, try some of these ideas. Who knows, you might just find your next great passion.
