We’re just on the other side of what we like to call Engagement Season – that exciting time that surrounds the holidays and Valentine’s Day when a flurry of new engagements pop up on social media newsfeeds and in your life. If you were one of the lucky ones to say “yes!” to forever recently, congratulations! There’s a lot that goes on in the days after getting engaged, and all of it is exciting, but it can feel a little overwhelming, too. If you’re not sure what your next steps (after calling EVERYONE, of course!) should be, here are a few of our favorite tips to soak up the moment and get started planning the wedding of your dreams without the added stress.
First Things First – Celebrate!
It’s easy to get caught up in the moment, in calling your family or sharing the news with friends, but don’t forget what this big step is all about – the two of you! Stop and soak in the love, grab a beer or pop some champagne for just the two of you and toast to your future together! Revel in the fact that you found your forever partner before you do anything else. It’s exciting stuff, savor it!
Do Some Research
Unless you’re in the wedding industry, it’s hard to know what you’re in for when it comes time to plan the wedding. A little research on the area in which you want to have your wedding can go a long way, and starting early gives you the best chance at getting exactly the day you want. Look around, and shop around, because there will be plenty of vendors in each area you’re looking for. It’s important to hire vendors who feel like friends, whose work speaks to you as a couple. Research is the best way to narrow down your options and get an idea of all the details you’ll be tending to in the time between the engagement and your “I Do”s.
Prioritize With Your Heart
There are a lot of decisions to make in every wedding. Some things will, in the end, have to be more important than others. Spend some time thinking about what you want your big day to look like, as a couple. Consider what’s most important to both of you, and prioritize based on where you two align. Be prepared to make compromises where you differ, but prioritize based on what means the most to you, not what you keep seeing on Pinterest.
Set Your Budget
Another big step for many couples, this is often easier to do after you’ve set some priorities and done some research specific to your vision. Setting a budget prior to research makes it difficult to get to an accurate estimate of what your big day is going to cost. Once your budget is set, make sure to assign chunks of it to the various areas of the wedding, and keep track as you sign contracts and write checks to vendors to make sure you stay on track.
Commemorate The Occasion
You’ve soaked up the moment, made the announcement, done the research, and set a budget. Now what? Well, one of the best parts about getting engaged (other than getting to plan a marriage to your favorite person, of course) is getting those engagement photos taken! Commemorate this big step in your lives with an engagement photo session at Monty Nuss. Capture the love you share with your to-be spouse and receive high-quality images that you can cherish as you plan your wedding and well after!
